About the Horsenecks
The Horsenecks are Gabrielle Macrae and Barry Southern — two powerhouse multi-instrumentalists based in Astoria, Oregon, whose sound blends early Appalachian fiddle and banjo music with country, bluegrass, and original folk songwriting.
Gabrielle grew up in Portland’s rich old-time scene, steeped in the fiddle traditions of the Southeastern U.S. Through years of traveling to festivals and learning from master players, she developed a dynamic style rooted in tradition but expanded by her work as a songwriter, pulling influences from across genres to craft songs that feel both grounded and fresh.
Barry brings decades of experience from Liverpool’s music scene, where he played lead guitar with the cult band Tramp Attack and was active in the UK’s old-time and bluegrass communities. Whether flatpicking, playing clawhammer banjo, or driving a three-finger roll, his playing is equally fiery and soulful.
Together, Gabrielle and Barry create a sound that’s hard to pin down — not strictly traditional, not exactly modern — with raw energy, powerful harmony singing, and musicianship that stands out on any stage.
